Solar Eclipses are a rare phenomenon that have caught the imagination of human beings from the beginning of time itself. Many cultures have taken them to be omens and portents of doom, believing that the sun itself was literally being eaten away.

Ancient Arabs used to believe that the appearance of an Eclipse would occur due to the death of someone. But This changed with the advent of Islam. According to Islamic tradition, the Prophet Mohamed said the at they are from among the signs of Allah.

"The sun eclipsed at the lifetime of Allah's Apostle on the day when (his son) Ibrahim died. So the people said that the sun had eclipsed because of the death of Ibrahim. Allah's Apostle said, "The sun and the moon do not eclipse because of the death or life (i.e. birth) of someone. When you see the eclipse pray and invoke Allah." [Al-Bukhari]

In the years and centuries since our knowledge has grown and we have indeed come to understand this sign. The orbit of the Moon passes in between the Earth and the Sun. From our vantage point on the face of the earth, the moon appears to completely cover the sun. and the moon's shadow is cast on the earth.

This truth was eluded to in the Quran. Surah al Anbiyah in verse 33 states "It is He Who created the Night and the Day and the sun and the moon: all (the celestial bodies) swim along each in its rounded course. "
